Shortening a Porsche 944 Rear Bumper to Euro Spec
Modifying the rear bumper of a Porsche 944 to Euro spec involves addressing the holes left behind after removing the US-spec bumper pads. These holes can be filled using JB Weld and finished with lightweight body filler for a smooth, seamless appearance. Relocating the signal lights slightly outward and covering the resulting gap with a small black plate enhances the aesthetic appeal. This modification has proven durable, withstanding three years of use without any cracking in the JB Weld.
Safely repositioning the rear bumper involves adjusting the shock absorbers without compromising their protective function. Draining the shock oil is not recommended as it reduces the shock’s ability to absorb impact. A safer approach involves modifying the shock mounts. First, the mounting flange on the shock is cut off and re-welded 3/4 of an inch forward. This requires careful welding in short bursts, cooling the shock body with water to prevent damage.
Next, the mounting point on the rod end of the shock is moved back 3/4 of an inch. This is achieved by drilling a new mounting hole behind the existing one and shortening the mount itself. This modification may require slight trimming of the aluminum bumper mount area to accommodate the shortened rod. Combined, these adjustments move the bumper back a total of 1.5 inches.
The result is a cleaner, more streamlined rear end that retains its functionality. While a front-end impact might cause some sheet metal deformation due to the repositioned bumper, this is preferable to more severe damage to the frame or potential injury to occupants. This modification offers a balance between aesthetics and safety, providing a visually appealing upgrade without significantly compromising the car’s structural integrity.
