Portugal vs France Euro Final: A Penalty Shootout Heartbreak

France defeated Portugal in a dramatic penalty shootout to secure a spot in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after a tense match in Hamburg. Theo Hernandez sealed the victory with the winning penalty after Joao Felix, a substitute, missed the only penalty of the shootout, hitting the post. French players erupted in celebration with their fans while the Portuguese team, who had just won a penalty shootout against Slovenia five days prior, were left dejected.

The loss marked the end of an era for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, as he had announced this would be his final European Championship. The pre-match anticipation centered around a potential showdown between Ronaldo and French star Kylian Mbappe. However, neither player significantly impacted the game, although Ronaldo successfully converted his penalty.

Mbappe was substituted in extra time due to a facial injury sustained earlier in the match, preventing him from participating in the shootout. He had been playing with a protective mask due to a broken nose. The match itself was a cautious affair with limited opportunities for both sides.

Portugal, however, created the better chances. Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha both had shots saved by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Randal Kolo Muani’s shot for France was deflected inches wide by Ruben Dias. Eduardo Camavinga then missed a golden opportunity for France, sending his close-range effort wide of the post.

The match went into extra time, and Ronaldo missed a crucial chance, sending a cutback from Francisco Conceicao high over the bar. Portugal’s luck ran out after a second consecutive shootout. France advanced to the semi-finals to face Spain in Munich.
