Euro Sham Pillow: A Simple Sewing Tutorial
Euro Sham Pillows are large, square decorative pillows, typically measuring 26×26 or 28×28 inches. They add a touch of elegance and comfort to any bed, making them a popular choice for bedrooms and guest rooms. Creating your own euro sham pillow is a surprisingly simple project, even for beginners. This tutorial will guide you through the steps of sewing a euro sham pillow with an envelope closure, a technique that eliminates the need for zippers and simplifies the process.
Fabric selection is the first step. Home decor fabric is recommended due to its thickness and durability, but any fabric can be used. The amount of fabric required will depend on the width of the chosen fabric. For instance, a 55-inch wide fabric might require approximately 3.5 yards for two pillows.
Once you’ve chosen your fabric, cut the following pieces: one 29×29 inch square for the front and two 29×24 inch rectangles for the back (per pillow). These dimensions allow for seam allowances and create an envelope closure on the back of the pillow.
The next step involves creating the envelope closure. Take the two 29×24 inch rectangles and fold over the long edge about half an inch to an inch. Iron the fold to create a crisp edge, then fold it over again the same amount and iron once more. This double fold creates a clean, finished edge for the envelope closure. Stitch along the folded edge of each rectangle to secure the hem.
Now, assemble the pillow front and back pieces. Place the 29×29 inch square face down on your work surface. Position the two 29×24 inch rectangles on top of the square, overlapping the folded edges in the center to form the envelope opening. Ensure the right sides (printed sides) of all fabric pieces are facing inward. This layered arrangement resembles a fabric sandwich.
Pin all layers together securely, ensuring the edges are aligned. Sew a straight stitch around all four edges of the pillow, leaving a seam allowance of approximately half an inch.
For a fuller, more professional look, use a pillow insert that is slightly larger than the finished pillow cover. For example, a 26×26 inch cover should be paired with a 28×28 inch insert. This prevents the pillow from appearing flat and ensures a plump, well-shaped euro sham. Down or feather inserts are recommended for their softness and ability to be fluffed, but polyester fill can also be used.
To add flanges, mark a two-inch border around the edges of the pillow cover. For crisp, structured flanges, consider inserting plastic collar stays within the border before sewing. Secure the collar stays with fabric glue.
Sew along the marked lines to create the flanges, ensuring the collar stays are enclosed within the seam. This technique adds a tailored finish to the euro sham pillow.
Once the flanges are sewn, turn the pillow cover right side out. Insert the oversized pillow insert through the envelope opening on the back. Fluff the pillow to distribute the filling evenly.
