Information About the Turkish Currency

The currency of Turkey (Türkiye) and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was introduced in its current second edition in the year 2005 with the denomination of the New Turkish Lira. The currency (ISO 4217 = TRY) replaced the previous one (ISO = TRL) with a truncation of 6 zeros. This was established to strengthen its value, which had greatly decreased due to the high inflation of the previous 30 years. The ratio between the two currencies was therefore 1 New Lira for 1,000,000 Old Lira, TRY/TRL = 1,000,000. The old currency remained in circulation together with the new one until the end of 2005. The new currency (Yeni Türk Lirası) was subdivided into 100 new kurus (symbol Ykr). Since 2009, the prefix “new” (yeni) has disappeared, and since then, new issues of banknotes and coins only bear the words lira and kurus with symbols TL and Kr. In common language, the Turkish currency is also called Kağıt, Mangır, or Papel. The ISO code is TRY (until 2005 it was TRL). Turkey is a presidential republic, its capital is the city of Ankara, and it has a population of approximately 82 million inhabitants. Istanbul, the most populous city, exceeds 15 million inhabitants.
