85 Euro Injector Upgrade: Unleashing Hidden Power in a 1985 Euro 16V

Upgrading the fuel injectors on a classic 1985 Euro 16V 5-speed can significantly enhance its performance, and surprisingly, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Recently, I undertook this very project, fitting a set of new 4-hole injectors, and while it took a bit longer than initially anticipated, the results were well worth the effort, especially considering the potential for an 85 euro budget-friendly upgrade.

To facilitate this upgrade, I acquired one of the first sets of injector adapters and clips from Greg Brown. These precision-engineered components are truly impressive, resembling fine jewelry in their craftsmanship. While my apologies for not capturing a better photograph, their quality was evident even before installation.

These adapters are crucial for seamlessly integrating modern injectors into the older fuel rail system of the 1985 Euro 16V. This ensures a proper fit and reliable fuel delivery, key factors in maximizing the benefits of your 85 euro injector upgrade.

The injectors themselves were sourced from Roger – high-quality 24lb hi impedance 4-hole injectors. These injectors are designed to provide improved fuel atomization compared to older designs, leading to more efficient combustion and noticeable performance gains. Choosing the right injectors is paramount for a successful 85 euro performance enhancement.

Before embarking on this injector replacement, it’s absolutely essential to have a fresh set of injector body hold down rubbers on hand. These rubber grommets fit onto the injector body and allow the metal bracket to securely press the injector into the intake manifold.

Attempting to reuse the old rubbers is highly discouraged as they are likely to be brittle and cracked due to age and heat cycling. For a small investment, new rubbers ensure a proper seal and prevent vacuum leaks, crucial for optimal engine performance after your 85 euro injector upgrade.

Furthermore, replacing the fuel line is a highly recommended step during this process. Old fuel lines can become hardened and prone to cracking, posing a safety risk and potentially hindering fuel delivery.

For securing the fuel line to the Greg Brown adapter caps, I opted for robust FI clamps. Connecting the fuel line to the fuel rails required a bit more effort, as it’s a tight push-on fit. However, ensuring secure and leak-free fuel connections is paramount for the safety and performance of your 85 euro investment.

A necessary modification prior to injector installation involves addressing the pintle caps. The outer rim of these caps must be removed to guarantee the lower O-ring seal seats fully into the intake manifold.

I utilized a soldering gun with a cutting flange, making two rotations to melt the plastic rim. Afterward, the softened plastic can be easily bent and removed. For a clean finish, a fresh razor blade was used to carefully trim any remaining plastic from the caps. Extreme caution is needed during this trimming to avoid damaging the delicate O-ring seal, as this could compromise the effectiveness of your 85 euro injector upgrade.

Once the pintle caps are properly trimmed, it’s wise to test fit the injector into the manifold. This ensures the bracket aligns correctly and the injector seats as intended. This pre-installation check is a valuable step in ensuring a smooth and successful 85 euro injector upgrade.

To further ease injector installation and ensure proper sealing, I applied Dow Corning 111 silicone grease to the O-rings. This lubricant facilitates smooth insertion into both the adapter caps and the intake manifold, minimizing the risk of O-ring damage and promoting a tight seal, essential for maximizing the benefits of your 85 euro performance upgrade.

Finally, a touch of Deoxit was applied to all injector electrical leads. This contact enhancer helps improve electrical conductivity and ensures reliable injector firing, contributing to consistent engine performance after your 85 euro injector upgrade.

The immediate results of this injector upgrade were striking. Throttle response became noticeably quicker, and a persistent engine miss that I had been troubleshooting completely vanished. The engine’s exhaust note at idle also took on a more pronounced and potent character.

The increased power was immediately apparent. I now need to exercise greater caution to avoid breaking rear-end traction, as initiating drifts has become surprisingly easy. Aggressive pedal input can now readily induce tire spin, a level of power previously absent. This newfound responsiveness and power are a testament to the effectiveness of even a modestly budgeted 85 euro injector upgrade.

In conclusion, this injector upgrade receives an enthusiastic two thumbs up. It’s a performance enhancement that is genuinely “well worth the price of admission,” especially when considering the potential for achieving these gains within an 85 euro budget. The next step in further enhancing exhaust flow and performance? An X-pipe is definitely on the horizon. A sincere thank you to Greg and Roger for providing excellent components that have unlocked a noticeable performance improvement in my classic Euro 16V.
