Euro 2028: What We Know So Far
UEFA Euro 2028 will be held in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. This joint bid, encompassing England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, was selected by the UEFA Executive Committee in October 2023. Ten stadiums across these countries will host matches, with iconic venues like Wembley Stadium, Hampden Park in Glasgow, Dublin Arena, and the National Stadium of Wales included. Approximately three million tickets are expected to be available for fans.
The tournament is projected to take place from June 9th to July 9th, 2028, though these dates haven’t been officially confirmed by UEFA. The 2028 championship will mark the second time the European Championship is held in the British Isles, with England hosting the previous tournament in 1996.
The anticipated format for Euro 2028 will likely mirror the structure used in previous tournaments since 2016. This format involves 24 qualifying teams divided into six groups of four. The top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-place teams, will advance to the knockout stage, culminating in the final match. Full competition regulations will be released by UEFA approximately two years prior to the tournament kick-off.
Qualifying for Euro 2028 will follow a new consolidated format. National teams will be drawn into twelve groups, each consisting of four or five teams. These teams will compete in a home-and-away round-robin format, with matches commencing in March 2027 and concluding in November 2027. Group winners will secure direct qualification to Euro 2028. Runners-up will either qualify directly or participate in play-off matches against teams from the UEFA Nations League. These crucial play-off matches are scheduled for March 2028, determining the final teams that will compete in the tournament.
