Portugal vs France Euro 2024: France Triumphs in Penalty Shootout

France secured their place in the Euro 2024 semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Portugal following a tense 0-0 draw in Hamburg. Theo Hernandez converted the decisive penalty, while Joao Felix’s miss proved costly for Portugal.

French players celebrated their victory with jubilant fans after the tense shootout concluded.

Portugal, who had previously overcome Slovenia in a penalty shootout just days before, were left disappointed after their Euro 2024 journey ended. The defeat marked the end of an era for Cristiano Ronaldo, as he had announced this tournament would be his final European Championship.

The pre-match anticipation centered on a potential showdown between Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappe. However, neither player significantly impacted the game, although Ronaldo successfully converted his penalty.

Mbappe was substituted in extra time due to a facial injury sustained earlier in the match, preventing him from participating in the shootout. The match itself was a cagey affair with limited clear-cut chances.

Portugal had the most promising opportunities, with Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha both denied by French goalkeeper Mike Maignan. Randal Kolo Muani’s deflected shot for France went narrowly wide, and Eduardo Camavinga missed a close-range chance to put France ahead.

The game went into extra time, where Cristiano Ronaldo missed a golden opportunity to score, sending a shot over the bar. Portugal’s luck eventually ran out in the shootout, marking their second consecutive match decided by penalties.

France will now face Spain in the semi-finals in Munich on Tuesday.
